Fantastic start to the cyclo-cross season

Twenty Wheelers raced in the cyclo-cross event in the various age category events at the Eastern League meeting at Chelmsford on Sunday 10th September.The course included 3 sets of steps to be negotiated plus series of uphill and downhill sections.
The total number of riders who competed in the days racing was well over 300 – a good start to the season

Dylan Starkey led the Under 12 race from start to finish in a field of 35 riders for the first Wheelers victory of the new CX season. He was followed in by Rupert Cavill 7th, Finlay Woodliffe 9th, Tommy Liddiard 21st and Harry Eagle 26th. George Nutall was 23rd in the under 10 race

Next up were a field of 80 riders in the Youth event for under 16/14 . Oli Stockwell attacked from the start and opened up a lead and was never headed winning the race by one minute with an impressive ride. Archie Peet rode well to take 4th place, Tom Sharples 7th and Euan Woodliffe 8th and first under 14 rider. Ellen Bennett was 4th under 16 girl.

The 50+ race also had a field of 80riders which included the junior and senior women riders. Elspeth Grace took first place in the womens category with Ellie Cadzow 3rd.

The 40+ race had four Wheelers senior riders in yet another massive field – Keith Stockwell rode well to finish in 14th spot with John Cavill 22nd , Malcolm Starkey and James Robertson further down the field.

The final race of the day was for senior and junior riders, Joe Bennett was 9th in the junior race.

On Saturday Joe Bennett and Lauren Higham competed in the GHS 10 mile Time trial final a few miles north of Huntingdon. Joe Bennett was 46th in a time of 23.54 while Lauren was second in her age group in a time of 25.43. The event was won in a time of 21.40.

Attention all track, road and cyclo-cross riders.

The track racing season is now almost over and the following switch to the use of road bikes and cyclo-cross is now under way.

MONDAYS – the last track training session on track bikes will be on Monday 4th September. Monday evening sessions will then cease and riders should attend the open road bike sessions on Wednesday evenings.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY – cyclo-cross training is now under way and will continue through until March 2018. (Senior and 14+ youth age group on Tuesdays and the younger group – minimum age 9 years on Wednesdays).

WEDNESDAY – from 30th August Road bikes on the track will replace the track bike sessions.

FRIDAY – last track league meeting of the year – Friday 8th September.

SATURDAY mornings – track bikes will replaced by road bikes as from Saturday 9th September – 14 years and above (last track bike session is 2nd September). Go Ride free-wheel sessions will continue as normal. Off road and road rides will also be organised.

WW Youth Track Championship – Results

The Club track Championships for Under 10,12 and 14 was run at Gosling Sports Park on Wednesday 28th June. 23 riders were there for the 4 event Omnium – time trial, elimination race, sprint and scratch race.

Under 14 – 9 riders
The opening two lap time trial was won by Joe Kiely, Michal Sumner, Euan Woodlife and Tom Sharples had a close battle in the first heat with Michael Sumner just edging out the Euan and Tom.
Joe Kiely rode away from the field in the Elimination race for win number two with the minor places going to Michael, Tom and Euan. These four riders lined up for the one lap sprint – in a close finish Tom crossed the line first was relegated to fourth place for not holding his line and impeding the other riders. Euan was placed first, Joe second and Tom fourth. In the final 6 lap scratch race Joe Kiely attacked in the first few laps while Michael, Euan and Tom rode a tactical battle and finished in that order.
There were three girls in the combined under 14 group – Ellen Bennett, Eva McCabe and Sasha Blendis. Ellen finished in 5th place in each of the 4 races to take the prize for the first girl.
The final result – 1 Joe Kiely (5pts), 2 Michael Sumner (9pts) 3 Euan Woodliffe (11pts) 4- Tom Sharples (15pts), 5 – Ellen Bennett (20pts) 6 – Eva McCabe (26pts), =7th – Max Jackson/Toby Brown 9th – Sasha Blendis

Under 12 – 9 riders
Cormac Nisbet won the one lap time trial from Thomas Dixon/Tom Oliver tied for third place. Cormac also won the Elimination race with Dylan Starkey second and Thomas Dixon third. In the 4 up Sprint Dylan won from Thomas, Cormac and Tom. In the 4 lap scratch race the race was stopped when Cormac crashed in lap 2 but after being patched up by the First Aider (Ben Smith) he started in the rerun. Dylan won the scratch race followed in by Cormac, Thomas, Tom and Beth Bennett.
The final results – 1 Cormac Nisbet (7pts), 2 – Dylan Starkey (8pts) 3 Thomas Dixon (10pts) 4- Tom Oliver (15pts) 5 – Beth Bennett (20 pts) first girl, 6 –Jeremy Landon, 7- Anya Jenkins, 8 – Harry Oglethorpe, 9th – Finlay Stevenson

Under 10 – 5 riders
This proved to be a battle for the top two places between Fin Woodliffe and Rupert Cavill. The remaining three riders Henry Landon, William Jenkins and Elice Whittaker found themselves competing for the minor places.
Fin won each of the 4 races closet followed by Rupert.
Final results – 1 – Fin Woodliffe (4 pts) 2 – Ruprt Cavill (8pts) 3 – Henrt Landon, 4 – William Jenkins, 5- Elice Whittaker

It was good to see so many riders competing for the various club trophies (which will be presented at the next awards evening in early 2018).

Our thanks to the various time keepers, holders, judges, scorers, first aiders, bike builders etc who offered their services for the evenings racing and made it all possible

Weekend Cycle Racing

The Wheelers were competing in a variety of events in various locations at the weekend

The weekend got under way with the CC Hackney Primavera road race on Saturday at the Lee Valley – Tom Sharples and Euan Woodliffe were first and third in the under 14 event, Joe Bennett 6th in the under 16 group with Fin Woodliffe 2nd and Rupert Cavill 4th in the under 10 event. In the girls events Beth Bennett came 4th in under 12s and Ellen Bennett 8th in under 14s.

On Sunday some were back at Lee Valley for the third and final qualifying round of the Youth Omnium series on the Olympic Park track for a great day’s racing.

Archie Peet was 9th overall in the under 16 boys event in a tough field. Josie Griffin was third in the Under 16 girls event. In the under 14 events Tom Sharples finished 4th, Eual Woodliffe 7th and Michael Sumner 9th. Thomas Dixon was 4th in under 12 boys.

The top 4 in U16 and U14 age bands in the three race series will qualify for the final event at Herne Hill in June – congratulations to Josie Griffin and Euan Woodliffe who have both got  through to to the final. Tom Sharples just missed out – 5th in the series.  Thomas Dixon was 3rd overall in U12 boys category.

Also on Sunday, Oli Stockwell and Joe Kiely travelled to Ashe Moor inYorkshire for round 3 of the HSBC National Mountain Bike event – Oli was 9th in the under 16 event while Joe Kiely was 2nd in the under 14 race. The event was run on a tough hilly course with lots of tricky downhill descents over loose rocks. A tough and very tiring course.

Elspeth Grace rode the Women’s road race event at Cranfield near Bedford. The  field in the 40 mike race split into various groups as the race developed. Elspeth was in the leading group and was places 10th in the uphill finish.
