The Welwyn Wheelers Cycling Club is one of the premier racing clubs in the South East of England and is accredited with Clubmark and British Cycling’s Go-ride status. Based at the Gosling Sports Park our key aim is to enable its members to promote and participate in cycle racing. The banked velodrome at the Sports Park affords us a unique opportunity to fulfil this aim. The Welwyn Wheelers organise a variety of open races and open race meetings during the year. The foremost of these is the weekly track series which takes place on Friday evenings at the floodlit velodrome. We also promote several weekend track meetings, a 50km individual hilly time trial held at Easter, an open road race and two open cyclocross competition held in October & January.
Club events include individual 10 mile time trials, a hill climb and a cyclocross competition. The time trials are open to both club members and visitors and are held every Tuesday on a local course. The hill climb takes place in October again on local roads while the cyclocross is held at one of the local cyclocross league events.
We have regular Coaching sessions throughout the year. The club organises a Go-Ride session on Saturday mornings to provide skills training for riders so they can move on to racing. These sessions are open to both club and non-club members but we have an age limit on the track. Cyclocross training starts in October together with ‘road bikes’ on the track. Club runs, which cater for riders with at least a modest level of fitness, leave from Gosling Sports Park on Sunday mornings for two to three hours. As part of the summers coaching programme, the club provides track coaching for all ages and specialised track bikes for hire for a small fee. See the Welwyn Wheelers Membership Benefits page for more details.
The address of the Gosling Sports Park is:
Stanborough Road, Welwyn Garden City, Herts AL8 6XE
If you would like to know more why not come down to one of our sessions at the Gosling Sports Park and have a chat with the Coaches and Club members to find out if the club is right for you? The best sessions to do this are Wednesday evenings between 7 and 9pm and Saturday mornings between 9 and 11am. When you know that you would like to join it is now possible to do so online (there is £1 admin charge for this service). Alternatively a form can be picked up at the track at Gosling Sports Park. Please see the Join Our Club page for more information.
