Great win for Joe Kiely at Colchester today in the under 12’s with a lead of half a lap, He started of very strong and quickly took a sizeable lead. He found a slippery corner half way through but kept the bike in control. Around 3 laps to the end of the race Joe came off the bike hurting his hip and elbow, he got back on and still managed a lead of half a lap to win.

Well done to Ollie Stockwell and Jamie Dene in the Under 14 Boys  a fantastic race. Both  leading from start to finish, whittling down a lead group of four to a final sprint just between Ollie and Jamie. Ollie won by half a wheel to take the top step of the podium and Jamie second.

Well done to Lauren 1st under 14 Girls and 3rd in the under 16. A tough race, Lauren didn’t have the best of starts, struggling to clip in off the start line. She recovered well throughout the first two laps and was soon hunting down the second placed under 16 rider. Unfortunately the effort began to show and she didn’t quite have the pace to get past her before the finish.

Great Race for Will Raymond in the Under 16 Boys.  A very strong competition with lots of tactics taking place. Will fought for his place gaining several seconds in the last lap from the people behind to come in 2nd.

2nd Claim-WW Racer Daniel Maynard took part in the Junior Race. A field of 11 set off for the fifty minute race and was soon thinned down to six to compete the last quarter of the race. A strong attack from Ex – WW Racer Laurence Kirby saw the field ‘sit up’ leaving Dan the only person interested in chasing him down. This he did but at considerable expense leaving him unable to contend the final sprint to the line, leaving him in sixth place.

Hillingdon Youth TT 24th May 2015

Wins all round for Welwyn riders!

Sunday saw the 2015 Hillingdon youth TT take place at the Hillingdon Slipstreamers home road circuit in Hayes. The course was set so that all riders would complete 10 laps of the full course which would  bring them just under the 10 mile mark. Taking part for Welwyn Wheelers in the under 12 category was Joe Kiely and in the Under 14 category Lauren Higham and Oliver Stockwell would be representing the club.

Joe Kiely got under way just after 11:15 and immediately started to catch the other competitors ahead of him. As one of the last to be set off, Joe had a clear sight of all the other riders and over the course of 10 miles, methodically picked them off one by one to ensure that his finishing time of 25 minutes and 40 seconds was an astonishing 1 minute and 50 seconds ahead of his closest rival. Joe attacked from the very start and it was clear that his pace and judgement over the distance was spot on as he never slowed and consistently put in lap times of just over 2 minutes 30.

In the under 14 race, Lauren Higham and Oliver Stockwell were also the penultimate and final riders to set off and again they used this to their advantage by focussing on the riders in front of them. Lauren consistently put in lap times  in the 2 minute 30 region, dipping below this target time in the middle of the race and bringing her to the finish in a time of 25 minutes and 20 seconds. Her smooth style and metronomic pedalling was clearly an advantage as she took the girls U14 title by just under 2 minutes. This is Lauren’s second TT triumph in just over a week as she won the North Road CC Juvenille award over 25 miles last weekend in a time of 1 hour 13 and this just her second outing on the new bike provided by Stevenage Community Trust.

Oliver Stockwell had a less than auspicious start as he unclipped his foot from the pedal at the start but, perhaps driven by this, accelerated away from the start line and barely slowed down from start to finish. Ollie’s aggressive approach saw him catch many of his rivals over the 10 miles and by the finish he was 1 minute and 20 seconds ahead of the second place finish. Ollie set himself a new personal best with an amazing finishing time 23 minutes and 5 seconds. An average speed of just under 26mph!

The prizes on the day meant that all three Welwyn riders finished top of their respective categories even though all three are new to the discipline. I’d like to thank Dave George and his team at Hillingdon Slipstreamers for putting on an exceptionally well organised and well run event.

ECCA 50 mile TT – Saturday 16th May

Martin Dossett rode in the ECCA 50 mile TT on Saturday 16th May on the E2. Conditions were mild, sunny and dry but with a 7 m/s W/NW wind. When warming up he didn’t notice the wind and thought he may of got away with it but as soon as he went down the slip road onto the A11 he was being push all over the place. He thought it would be a cross wind for the whole of the race but with the course as it is it seems it was a cross tail going out which made for a hard grovel on the return leg with his average speed reducing all the time. He finished 19th out of 59 in 01:54:16, the winner, David McGaw (Cambridge CC) clocking 01:43:27 winning by nearly 3 minutes.

James Ambrose-Parish Jumps the Senior A’s

The Welwyn Track league was back to good numbers again on the 15/05/15 with 31 youth riders and 46 senior riders.

The ride of the night came from James Ambrose-Parish (Lee Valley) in the senior 10 mile race as he started with the senior B group ¾ of a lap up and within 2 laps had jumped across to get on the tail of the senior A riders. It became apparent that the A riders did not know this had occurred and Ambrose-Parish stayed in the lead and took the win.

John McClelland (Bush Healthcare CRT) had a good night placing consistently throughout the night to keep him in front overall. Frank Longstaff (Team Terminator) also had a good night and seems to be in the hunt for the league overall and could be one of McClelland’s main rivals for the track league crown.

The youth riders again had a competitive night of racing in the C, D, E and B categories. The youth A racing however was dominated by Ryan Green (Lee Valley Youth CC) who won every race that night.

Rain stops play

Due to the weather and some big race meetings over the weekend, the Welwyn track league saw a depleted field on Friday night with only 13 youth riders and 26 senior riders.

Despite the low numbers there was still plenty of competitive rides not least the 16 lap points race for the senior As which saw Andrew Hastings (Richardson’s Trek RT) take the win.

Hastings also featured in the 3 man break – at around the 20 lap mark, in the 10 mile scratch race at the end of the meeting.  Hasting was joined by Joe Gorman (Full Gas) and Mike Broadwith (Arctic Tacx RT).  However a few laps later, with the trio having a half lap advantage on the rest of the main field, the heavens opened and the race had to be abandoned.  After some discussion between the judges and the chief commissaire it was agreed that the trio would not have been caught so were awarded 2 points each.

Home rider, Keith Bryceland (Welwyn Wheelers) finished the night on top in the senior B racing with some good riding to win the scratch race and get a close 2nd in the devil.

The youth A racing was dominated all night by Matthew Sheppard and Ben Selfe, both from Lee Valley, with very strong rides in all events including a very hard fought Keirin.

With only two youth B riders on the night, Ollie Stockwell (Welwyn wheelers) and Jamie Dene (Welwyn Wheelers) the racing was a rider on rider battle with Stockwell finishing on top every time.

The Keirin in the youth CDE, was one of the highlights of the night with a great ride by Joe Kiely (Welwyn Wheelers) to take third behind Jenna Miles (Welwyn Wheelers) and Michael Sumner (Welwyn Wheelers) respectively.
