Peter Waghorn MBE 1933-2023

It is with greatest sadness that Welwyn Wheelers announce the death of Peter Waghorn, MBE. Peter had been in frail health for many months after a fall last year and passed away peacefully in his sleep last night at Oakview Lodge Care Home, on the old QEII site in Welwyn Garden City. Peter would have been 90 years old on 7 Feb 2023.

Peter is well-known to several generations of cyclists in the North London area. He will be remembered as a long-time volunteer and supporter of Sport at a local and grass-roots level. He was Club Chairman for Welwyn Wheelers for many decades and remained on the Committee at the time of his death, though failing health prevented him from attending meetings in person in the last year. Peter took over organisation of Friday Track League in 1968 and stepped down just a few years ago. He remained a keen spectator and was regularly in attendance in the 2022 season, when weather permitted.

Peter was appointed to MBE in 2013 for services to sport – not only cycling and also sailing, Peter having been a leading light for many years at the Grafham Water Sailing Club. Peter also led the Trust which for many years ran Gosling Sports Park and served on the board of the National Federation (BCF). A fuller account of his contributions can be found in the book Welwyn Wheelers: “A History on Wheels” (Paul Savage).
