Reflecting the continued growth in competitive Women’s road racing, Sunday saw a bumper entry of Welwyn based riders racing in the first ever Lovelo Cinelli Women’s 234 race over the Wing/Soulbury circuit in Buckinghamshire.
Welwyn Wheelers were well represented by Claire Fisk and Anneke Prins, with Gaia Casciello, Rachel Heptonstall, Elanor Cadzow, Kathryn Anderson, Rebecca Maynard and Anna Carter riding for Kinetic Cycles Welwyn RT.
On the rolling eight mile circuit the race soon broke into three distinct groups with riders from Welwyn showing well in each.
By mid distance the leading group had neutralised various attacks and a group of thirty riders remained in contention, including Casciello, Fisk and Heptonstall.
Anneke Prins meanwhile was in the second group on the road, working well as this group gained time on the leaders.
Unfortunately by this stage punctures for Anderson and Carter had forced both to retire.
As the main bunch took the bell it was all to play for as the leaders attacked the final climbs at Soulbury and back via Stewkley into Wing before the long drag to the finish.
In the final sprint Gaia Casciello moved up well to secure 14th place, with Claire Fisk 18th and Rachel Heptonstall 28th
Anneke Prins followed soon after the remainder of the chase group to secure herself a fine finish following a strong ride.
