Over the weekend there were three local cyclo-cross league events and the Wheelers were represented in all of them
Twenty four riders rode in the Eastern League event on Saturday at Princess Helena College in Preston promoted by CC Ashwell – a new venue and an excellent course.
In the Youth event Joe Kiely was 7th and third Under 14 boy having lost second place due to a crash in the final lap. Tom Sharples was 10th – the Wheelers girls all rode well – Imogen Chastell was 12th and first Under 14 girl, Lauren Higham 20th and first under 16 girl on a tough course .
In the strong 40+ race john Armstrong was 20th and Alex Peeke 26th, Michael Parry was 6th overall in the Senior/junior race and second placed Junior.
Also on Saturday a number of the Wheelers youth riders travelled to Milton Keynes for the Central League event – Thomas Dixon and Dillon Knott were 4th and 5th in the Under 10 event while Ted Brett (9th) Alfie Aldridge (10) rode the under 14 race. Gwill Park was 8th in the under 16 event.
On Sunday in the East League race at Basildon Michael Parry was 6th and top junior in the senior event and Keith Stockwell 19th in the 40+ race
Will Raymond won the youth race by almost a minute with Sam Asker 6th and Joe Kiely 9th. Top girl was Elspeth Grace in 12th spot. (Will, Sam,Elspeth and four others were unable to ride in the Cyclo-cross event at Preston as they were selected to ride a BC track Training session on the Olympic Velodrome track on Saturday)
24 riders from Welwyn Wheelers made the short journey to Princess Helena College in Preston for Round 7 of the Eastern Cyclocross League.
Imogen Chastell was first girl in the Youth race and Michael Parry continued his fine run of form with 6th in the Senior race and 2nd Junior

A small group of Wheelers riders competed in the opening round of the National Cyclo-cross series at Southampton – Elspeth Grace and Lauren Higham rode in the Youth Girls race. Elspeth rode exceptionally well to take 3rd place with Lauren 7th. Ollie Stockwell had another storming ride in the Under 14 boys event and was in the top three as they came to the finish – he finished third just losing out in the sprint for second place. Joe Kiely was 9th in the field of 31 riders.
Imogen Chastell came 11th in the under 14 girls.
Will Raymond was 6th and Sam Asker was 30th in the Under 16 event.
Cai Davies was 17th and Micheal Parry was 23rd in the junior men event.

Stanborough Park was the venue for the Welwyn Wheelers Cyclo-cross East League event on Saturday. The course builders set out at 6-30am to mark out a tough course for the riders and the first race got under way at 10-00am for the Under 10 riders and the final race for Seniors was completed by 2-45pm.
The total number of entries for the various age categories was 340 of which no less than 55 were from Wheelers.
Top performers on the day were Will Raymond who led the Youth race of 62 riders from start to finish with a superb ride – Ollie Stockwell was second placed rider and comfortably won the under 14 category with a great ride. There were 22 Wheelers riders in the youth race – Tom Durkin was 5th, Joe Kiely 10th, Lauren Higham 14th and best placed girl rider.
In the 40+ race of 80 riders Keith Stockwell – one of the course building team and race marshalls who had at the venue since 6-30 am – had his best ride of the season finishing in 8th place. John Armstrong and Alex Peeke (also course builders and marshalls) were 20th and 30th plus Martin Dossett 32nd.
The under 10 race had 28 riders – Rupert Cavill was top Wheeler in 6th place, Euan Woodlife was third in the 37 strong field of Under 12 riders.
