Lee Valley Youth Omnium – Round 1

The Wheelers youth riders were out in force to ride in the British Cycling Youth Omnium series at the Lee Valley Velodrome on Saturday. The 5 event Omnium consists of a Time Trial, Elimination race, Sprint, scratch and Points race with placings in each event to count. The combined results of all four meetings will be added together and the top five riders in each age group will qualify for the final in Cardiff in July. The next two rounds will be at Gosling Sports Park on Saturday May 7th and the following day at Brighton.
The final results from Lee Valley are awaited.

Will Raymond finished 3rd in the tough and highly competitive under 16 Boys category in a field of 28 riders with a good set of results – the winner was ex Wheelers Ethan Vernon who won all five races.

The Wheelers had four riders in the 20 rider under 16 girls group with Josie Griffin and Millie Gage being placed second and third in this group.

Oli Stockwell had a tough time in the under 14 category – he was second in the opening 1Km time trial but an error by the race officials saw him taken out in lap 3 of the elimination race – his name was displayed on the overhead board so he left the track. He was in the front of the race but the officials put up the wrong number on the board so he was eliminated. He fought back to take 3rd spot in the scratch race and with positive rides in the Kieren and points events he eventually finished 5th overall but was disappointed to have been wrongly eliminated in race 2 when in a good position to finish in the top three overall.

Imogen Chastell took a fine 6th place in the under 14 girls category and Euan Woodliffe was 4th in the under 12 boys event
Final results from the Lee Valley event will be published later

Results of  The Finsbury Park CC “Hilly” 10 Mile Time Trial

Saturday 16th April 2016

Year four of the Finsbury Park CC Hilly saw fewer riders than the previous year turning out to tackle the Little Switzerland course but still attracted some of this year’s best and improving testers. Rain and reported sleet just before the start wasn’t enough to put off the local riders and that was the case for the winner, a magnificent ride by Gray Turnock of Finsbury Park CC in a time of 24:01. Tim Davies 43 seconds behind took second spot and Andy Digby stripping over two and half minutes from last years’ time in third place.

Annabel Sill Welwyn Wheelers went one better than last year to take the Ladies first prize in a time of 28:39 knocking almost a minute off her previous year’s best. Also shortening her course best time was second lady Tracy Van Der Merwe closely followed by Lauren Higham in third, the only junior to attempt the course this year with an excellent performance – Lauren wins a spot prize donated by the time keepers and catering to encourage junior and female participation in cycling sport.

First in the 50+ category was Peter Anstey Welwyn Wheelers and this year’s team event was won by the hosts Finsbury Park CC with top 10 rides from Andy Turnock and Phil Murrell contributing to Gray Turnock’s winning time.

Weekend Results

A number of the Welwyn Wheelers youth riders travelled north to Hetton in Yorkshire for round 1 of the National Youth Circuit race events. There were large fields in all of the various age-based categories and the programme of events was delayed due to a variety of reasons.

The under 16 Boys event was run at a fast and furious pace and a small group of riders escaped in the final lap from the main bunch and avoided a massive crash in the final lap . Will Raymond finished in an excellent 7th position in a strong field.

The under 16 girls race contained four Wheelers – the race finished with a mass sprint for the bunch with Josie Griffin, Millie Gage and Elspeth Grace in the middle of the pack. Lauren Higham lost contact and was a lap down.

In the under 14 boys race Olie Stockwell was brought down by another rider in the neutralised zone and suffered minor injuries and was unable to participate in the event.

The first race of the day was the under 14 girls where Imogen Chastell was 10th she rode strongly in the main bunch in a 45km race, securing a fine top ten finish in a large field.

Also on Saturday Joe Kiely rode in the mud Sweat and Gears Mountain bike race in Essex. The under 16 and 14 riders started together – Joe was 4th overall and also won the under 14 category by five minutes with a great ride

On Saturday a large number of the Wheelers youth riders will be competing in the first round of the Omnium series at the Olympic track at Stratford.
